Before the Storm

Make a Family Emergency Plan

Every household should have a plan that includes:

Emergency contact information
An out-of-area family contact
Evacuation routes and destinations
Plans for pets and livestock
A communication plan if cell service is unavailable
A meeting place if family members become separated

One gallon of water per person per day
Non-perishable food
Prescription medications
First aid kit
Flashlights and extra batteries
Portable phone chargers
Cash
Important documents stored in waterproof containers
Pet food and supplies

Prepare Your Home

Secure outdoor furniture and decorations.
Trim trees and remove dead limbs.
Clear gutters and storm drains.
Fuel your vehicles before a storm arrives.
Review your homeowners and flood insurance policies.
Photograph your home and valuables for insurance purposes.

Stay Informed

Monitor weather conditions and emergency information through trusted sources.

Evacuation Preparedness

If local officials issue an evacuation order:

Leave as early as possible.
Follow designated evacuation routes.
Keep your gas tank full.
Bring medications, important documents, and emergency supplies.
Take your pets with you whenever possible.

Residents who need transportation or additional evacuation assistance should register with the State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry (STEAR) before hurricane season.

During the Storm

Stay indoors and away from windows.
Continue monitoring emergency alerts.
Never drive through flooded roads.
Use generators outdoors only and away from doors and windows.
Follow all instructions from local emergency officials.
